Erdogan: U.S. shouldn’t worry about Turkey’s purchase of S-400 from Russia

Turkey sees no reason for concern from the U.S. in connection with the Ankara-Moscow talks on the purchase of Russian S-400 air missile defense system, RIA Novosti reported.

"Why would it be worrying? Every country needs to take certain measures for its own security," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Ankara on July 25.

The statement was made only a day after the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the U.S. Armed Forces Joseph Dunford said that Turkey's purchase of the S-400 complexes from Russia would cause concern in Washington.

“How many times have we talked with America, but it did not work there, so whether we like it or not, we began making plans about the S-400 SAM. Our interested departments are negotiating, and this step will be taken," he added.

Erdogan also noted that negotiations on the missile system had been "largely" completed.

Previously, Russian Presidential Aide Vladimir Kozhin noted that Moscow sees no obstacles to the delivery of the S-400 to Turkey in connection with its membership in NATO.

In early June, General Director of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, said that Russia and Turkey agreed on all technical issues on the conclusion of a contract for the supply of Ankara S-400 surface-to-air missile systems.

The S-400 is Russia's next-generation air defense system, carrying three different types of missiles capable of destroying aerial targets at a short-to-extremely-long range. The weapon is capable of tracking and destroying all existing aerial targets, including ballistics and cruise missiles.
