Candy Green takes over as acting ambassador at US Embassy in Wellington

After the departure of Obama-appointed Ambassador Mark Gilbert, the US Embassy today announced Candy Green as its new Chargé D’affaires. Before coming to Wellington, she was based at the US Embassy in Paris. Here’s her bio, as released by the Embassy .

Candy Green, the Chargé d’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand, is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service. From 2011-2014 she served as the Counselor for Environment, Science, Technology and Health Issues at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France.

Previously, Ms. Green served in the U.S. Embassy Beijing, China, as Chief of the Trade, Transportation, Innovation and Intellectual Property Unit in the Economic Section 2008-2011. Prior to her assignment to China, Ms. Green was Director of the Office of Intellectual Property Rights at the Department of State, Washington DC. Earlier work in Washington included stints as an International Energy Officer (covering the former Soviet Union) and an International Environment Officer (sustainable forest management). Ms. Green worked for Caterpillar Inc.’s Petroleum Business Unit for one year through the State Department’s Executive Detail program, and her other overseas assignments have included: the U.S. Mission to NATO (Brussels); Tbilisi, Georgia; Moscow, Russia; Kathmandu, Nepal; and Barbados.

Ms. Green speaks fluent Mandarin, Russian and French. She obtained her BA from the University of California at Berkeley, majoring in Slavic Language and Literature, and did her Master’s work at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts. She is originally from Los Angeles, California.

    “Ms. Green speaks fluent Mandarin, Russian and French.” – Holy Moley – she’s wasted here! Sounds like an incredible woman – we should be honoured to have her here, although the heading to this article makes it sound like she is only temporary? But she should be working for the UN or something – she’ll be bored out of her tree in dull old New Zealand.
