NSDC approves bill on Ukraine's national security

Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) approved the draft law on Ukraine's national security at a meeting on Wednesday, January 17.

"At the meeting, members of Ukraine's NSDC discussed and supported the draft law on Ukraine's national security. This law was worked out in close cooperation with experts from NATO, the United States and the European Union in order to bring Ukraine's legislative framework into line with the standards of NATO member states," the council's press service reported.

After adoption by parliament, this document should become the basis for the development and updating of legislation in the sphere of national security and defense.

According to NSDC Secretary Oleksandr Turchynov, the law on Ukraine's national security should summarize all the reforms of the country's security and defense sector that have already been implemented and are to be implemented, as well as combine not only the basic foundations of national security, but also the issues of democratic civilian control and the principles of planning in these spheres.

He said that the bill was aimed at increasing the effectiveness of the activity of all elements of the security and defense sector in accordance with the norms and standards of NATO and the EU.

"The speedy adoption of this bill should be an important element in the sphere of protecting Ukrainian statehood and counteracting Russian aggression," Turchynov said.
