Vejonis said that the visit of the king is a special honor to Latvia on its centenary and proves the close relationship between both countries and excellent relations. The countries are united historically, already from the Hanseatic League, and by the friendly relations today after Latvia restored its independence.

"Both countries are active EU and NATO member states with a common goal for the future of a united, secure and economically developed Europe," said the president, adding that Latvia highly appreciates the Netherlands’ contribution to strengthening the Baltic security.

Latvia and the Netherlands are open and dynamic economies which can be seen in the growing bilateral trade and Dutch investments in Latvia. Today’s business seminar Smart Mobility will strengthen the bilateral economic relations between both countries, said Vejonis.

"Closer cooperation between both countries would be possible in bioeconomics, biomedicine, smart solutions in the energy sector, the ICT sector," said Vejonis.

The king of the Netherlands added that the parties discussed several issues, including cooperation in transport and logistics. He also said that the power and freedom of both countries lies in close cooperation within NATO and the EU.

King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands is paying a state visit to Latvia on June 11-12, and will meet Latvia’s top state officials – the Latvian president, Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis (Greens/Farmers) and Saeima speaker Inara Murniece (National Alliance).

Queen Maxima was also scheduled to arrive, but has cancelled her visit due to an unexpected family funeral.

The Dutch king later visited the Latvian National Library to present a book to the People’s Bookshelf. A meeting with participants of the Dutch-Latvian business seminar Smart Mobility is scheduled. The Latvian president and his wife will host a dinner for His Majesty later at night.
