NATO stands for territorial integrity of Iraq, and the alliance urges the government in Baghdad to work closely and in a positive way with the Kurdish government which was a force for stabilization and economic development, NATO Deputy Secretary General said in Yerevan on Monday.

During a meeting at the Yerevan State University, Rose Gottemoeller urged Iraq Baghdad to focus on unity and to look for the ways to work with the Kurds, perhaps to provide a special status for them.

“However, NATO is not a facilitator. We urge certain policy, but it is not for us to solve the problem,” she said when asked about NATO’s position on the situation in Iraq.

The NATO goals in Iraq and Afghanistan have changed, she said, adding that their main goal now is to give resources and tools to maintain security and stability.
