YEREVAN. – The European Court of Human Rights has announced its decision in connection with the lawsuit against Azerbaijan within the framework of the case on the murder of Gurgen Margaryan, an Armenian army officer who was killed with an axe in his sleep in Budapest. Hamazasp Danielyan, an MP from the ruling My Step bloc, stated this at Tuesday’s sitting of the National Assembly of Armenia.

According to him, years later it has been recorded that Azerbaijan—at the hands of its own army officer—has not only violated human rights, but, also, Baku's discriminatory policy towards Armenians has been proved.

As reported earlier, Ramil Safarov, a lieutenant in the Azerbaijani military, was extradited on August 31, 2012, from Hungary, where he was serving a life sentence—and with no expression of either regret or remorse—for the premeditated axe murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnership for Peace program in Budapest back in 2004.

As expected, Ramil Safarov’s return to Baku was welcomed, as was his act of murder, by the officials of president Ilham Aliyev’s government and much of Azerbaijani society, and the Azerbaijani president immediately granted him a pardon.
