The border between Mexico and America has a long history of bootleggers, drug traffickers and gun runners. Now egg smugglers can be added to that list.
A shortage in the US has set off a scramble for eggs, with desperate Americans cleaning out supermarket shelves, buying their own hens and even heading south of the border to dip into the Mexican supply.
US Customs and Border Protection said that seizures of black market eggs at ports of entry between October and last month were up by 36 per cent compared with the same period a year ago. The most action was in San Diego, with an increase of 158 per cent.
