The Princess of Wales enjoyed a glass of Guinness as she made an emotional return to her own regiment on St Patrick's Day during a solo engagement.

Kate handed out sprigs of shamrocks to soldiers from the Irish Guards at Wellington Barracks this morning before attending a parade to celebrate Ireland's patron saint.

She missed the Guards' celebrations last year after being diagnosed with cancer and apologised last summer for missing a key rehearsal for the annual Trooping the Colour .

Meanwhile, King Charles will meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney later today amid tensions between Canada and the United States over tariffs.

Looking ahead: What does King Charles meet with Canada's newly-elected Prime Minister mean for Donald Trump?

He had reportedly 'gone cool' on Britain after King Charles welcomed Volodymyr Zelensky to Sandringham in the wake of the Ukrainian President's disastrous trip to the White House.

Now, who knows how Donald Trump will feel as Britain's monarch welcomes the newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister to Buckingham Palace today.

PM Mark Carney will visit King Charles after a meeting with Sir Keir Starmer this afternoon, amid an ongoing trade war and dispute over the USA's aim to make Canada its '51st state'.

The King made President Trump an unprecented offer for a second state visit when Sir Keir visited Washington in February.

But after the monarch extended an offer to President Zelensky, it reportedly left Trump with a bitter taste in his mouth.

With PM Carney set to meet the King at the royal residence in London this evening, it does pose the question: will Trump be hurt again?

What did we learn from the Princess's emotional St Patrick's Day Parade reunion?

The Princess of Wales's return to St Patrick's Day Parade duties will have been a poignant one - as it marked one year since she had to miss the ceremony due to cancer treatment.

But as she made her emotional solo reunion with a radiant smile as the colonel of the Irish Guards, Kate gave a clear indication that she is getting back to her best.

Here's what we learned:

Prince George 'fascinated' by...Australia and New Zealand!

While chatting to Irish Guardsmen and their families in the Sergeants’ Mess at Wellington Barracks, the Princess told Corporal Adam Hamilton, an Australian reservist: 'George finds it fascinating that he has been to Australia and New Zealand.

'I would like to go back there with them now. It’s finding time to do that. But I love to travel – yes, it’s a long flight. But I love the Middle East because that’s familiar to me (from) growing up. There are so many opportunities now to travel, I think it’s brilliant to experience it.

‘We tend to go further afield when it’s official visits, it’s being able to carve out time to experience these countries in a more private capacity. Because otherwise you end up seeing lots of insides of amazing buildings but you don’t get to meet that many.. people

'It’s making sure that you can combine a bit of work with the children. I might see you down there!'

What a difference one year can make

The world was shocked when the Princess announced her cancer diagnosis in March 2024.

Among the many other complications it caused, her focus on recovery meant she had to cancel her visit to the St Patrick's Day Parade last year.

So, when she arrived today in the stunning bottle green outfit, full of smiles, making jokes and glowing as she shared a Guinness with the Irish Guard troops - it signalled one thing: Kate is getting back to her best.

The Princess's love for dogs continues with Turlough Mor

Over the years, Kate struck up an adorable friendship with Domnhall the dog who was was recruited as the regimental mascot for the First Battalion Irish Guards in 2013.

But following his retirement, Kate has made a new four-legged friend in the shape of Turlough Mor.

Also known as Seamus, the canine was recruited to the regiment in 2020 and is named after an ancient High King of Ireland.

Today, the Princess was snapped sharing a wholesome moment with Turlough Mor, before she passed an honorary shamrock to him.

‘Proud to be your Colonel’, says Kate as she wishes a Happy St Patrick's Day

The Princess has taken to social media to wish the public a Happy St Patrick's Day, saying she is 'proud' to be Colonel of the Irish Guards.

She added that it was 'great to be back' after missing last year's events to celebrate the regiment's 125th anniversary.

When the Princess stepped out at Wellington Baracks this morning, she looked every inch of royalty her title bestows.

And in the spirit of tradition, she added a shamrock pin to compliment the look we saw captured in numerous stunning photos throughout the day.

So, from the snaps of Kate drinking a pint fit for a Princess, to her passing a shamrock to the Irish Guards' Mascot Turlough Mor, here are our favourite pictures of the day.

'She was really nice and warm': What the Guards said about Kate

We've had some reaction from Irish Guards and their families following Kate's visit earlier today.

Guardsman Barry Loughlin, who led the toast, said afterwards:

She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general. She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered. You could tell she had a genuine interest in us.

Meanwhile Grace Hamilton, whose husband Adam is a corporal from Australia, added:

We spoke about Australia. She looks into your eyes when she speaks to you. It just shows she’s giving you her full attention.

The Princess of Wales, who wore a bottle green coat and matching hat with a gold shamrock brooch of the Irish Guards, was asked where she and her family lived.

'We are in Windsor at the moment,' she replied. 'We were in London but moved there for more green space. It’s close enough to London, not too far away.'

The Princess also chatted to section commanders in the bar about her husband’s beard.

'These trends come and go,' she said. 'I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for.'

Told that Noah Hogan, seven, whose father John is Company Sergeant Major, was a keen footballer, she replied: 'Our kiddies play football. Do Mummy and Daddy come and watch? Do you like the idea of being in the Army too?'

She also chatted to his brother Lucas, 12.

“You’re the same age as George. So you haven’t got exams this year?” She asked.

Told he has just joined the Army cadets, she said: 'You get to try so many different things there. Within the military, there are so many career different paths you can take. It’s so exciting.

'Actually it’s one of the things that I’m very keen to support, that recruitment side.'

Kate was chatting to Irish Guardsmen and their families in the Sergeants’ Mess at Wellington Barracks after putting money behind the bar for them to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

Chatting about how she and Prince William took their eldest son, Prince George, away with them on his first official tour when he was a baby, she told Corporal Adam Hamilton, an Australian reservist: 'George finds it fascinating that he has been to Australia and New Zealand.

'I would like to go back there with them now. It’s finding time to do that. But I love to travel – yes, it’s a long flight. But I love the Middle East because that’s familiar to me (from) growing up. There are so many opportunities now to travel, I think it’s brilliant to experience it.

Who is Irish Guards Mascot Turlough Mor?

Kate today shared yet another wholesome moment with an Irish Guards dog today at the St Patrick's Day Parade.

She previously had a bond with Domnhall, the Irish Wolfhound who was recruited as the regimental mascot for the First Battalion Irish Guards in 2013.

But today, the Princess was snapped with Irish Guards mascot, Turlough Mor, who was recruited to the regiment in 2020.

The canine, whose kennel name is Séamus, was named Turlough Mor as custom and tradition dictates that Irish Guards Mascots must be named after an ancient High King of Ireland.

King Turlough Mor ruled Connaught from 1106 to 1156 and ruled as High King of Ireland from 1136 to 1156.

She said: 'I loved our trip to Australia. There are so many opportunities now to travel.

'We tend to go further afield when it’s official visits. George always finds it fascinating that we’ve been there.'

The Princess and The Stout! Kate gets her Guinness - as soldiers say 'she had a genuine interest in us'

Well, it would hardly be St Patrick's Day without a Guinness at the forefront.

We speculated whether Kate would have one this year, but we may wonder no more after the Princess joined soldiers in the Junior Ranks’ cookhouse at Wellington Barracks for a half pint of the famous Irish stout.

Kate spoke informally with soldiers about their experiences, including those recently deployed overseas and others involved in training Ukrainian troops.

In a sitdown chat with a group of troops she quizzed them about the difficulties of being on deployment.

She said: 'Being able to manage that work-life balance – it’s tough.'

Guardsman Barry Loughlin, who led the toast, said afterwards: 'She wanted to know how things were going with the blokes in general.

'She was really nice and really warm. I was kind of flustered. You could tell she had a genuine interest in us.'

Three cheers for the Princess! Irish Guards give rousing applause for Kate as she returns to St Patrick's Day Parade duties

In London and in East Anglia, the Irish Guards gave a rousing three cheers for the The Princess of Wales at the end of their parades.

In her first St Patrick's Day Parade duties since 2023 - after missing last year's ceremony due to receiving cancer treatment - Kate was treated to a series of applause.

Celebrating the event, Commanding Officer Lt Col Ben Irwin-Clark said: ‘St Patrick’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the friendships that are so fundamental to our Regimental ethos and identity.

'With our busy and diverse operational schedules, it is the most prominent occasion for the Regimental family to come together and welcome Micks of all ranks from across the Army, past and present, along with their families.

'We raised a glass to those unable to attend this year, especially those deployed on Operations elsewhere.’

'Victoria’s heroes' celebrate 125th anniversary of their founding on special St Patrick's Day Parade

Today's celebrations are particularly special as it marks the 125th anniversary of the Irish Guards' founding by Queen Victoria.

Their creation was inspired by a suggestion from Lord Wolseley that the Irish Regiments should wear shamrock in their headdress on St Patrick’s Day each year.

This was suggested as a mark of the Crown’s appreciation of their exceptional courage at Ladysmith, South Africa during the Boer War.

As there were already Scots and English Guards, a new Regiment of Irish Guards was created in 1900.

Field Marshal Lord Roberts VC, an Irishman, was their first Colonel, and the first Irish Guardsmen were drawn from the Foot Guard Regiments.

Their first Colour was presented by King Edward VII in 1902, the year in which they received their first pedigree Irish Wolfhound Mascot.

The Daily Mail's Royal Editor, Rebecca English, had a front-row seat for the Princess's arrival.

In a video posted to X, Kate can be seen arriving and making conversation while being accompanied by a guardsman.

And the Princess's new hairstyle is at the forefront of conversation.

Kate can be seen sporting an 'updo', which is a women's hairstyle that involves 'sweeping the hair' or arranging the hair into a 'upstyle', usually for a special or formal occasion.

The Princess may be flying solo today - but what are the other Royals doing this week?

Alongside the Princess's visit to Wellington Barracks today, we told you how King Charles will meet the newly-elected Canadian PM, Mark Carney.

But they're not the only Royals with a busy schedule this week.

Prince William will make his first visit to Estonia on Thursday to visit British troops in the region.

In his role as colonel-in-chief of the Mercian Regiment, William will look at how troops are bolstering Nato's eastern flank as they deter Russian aggression.

He will also visit the capital city Tallinn to see how the country has handled the conflict in Ukraine.

A St Patrick's Day Guinness is a rite of passage for most.

And it appears the Princess is no different, having been pictured many times enjoying the famous stout after St Patrick's Day Parade ceremonies over the years.

While William may not be with her today - as today's engagements will be solo - will we see the Princess enjoying a pint of Ireland's most famous drink?

The Princess and Domhnall the dog: A tale of two friends

Over the years, the Princess struck-up a friendship with a four-legged pal - Domnhall the dog.

The Irish Wolfhound was recruited as the regimental mascot for the First Battalion Irish Guards in 2013.

Domhnall, whose name means ‘World Leader’ in Gaelic, came to the regiment from Northern Ireland and retired from his ceremonial role in September 2019 after six years of service

And over the years, Kate shared many adorable moments with the beloved canine.

King Charles set to meet Canadian PM amid tensions with Donald Trump

In a busy day for the Royal Family, King Charles will meet the newly-elected Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, amid an ongoing conflict with Donald Trump.

PM Carney, who formerly held a role as the Bank of England's governor, is seeking European alliances as President Trump seeks to declare Canada as the USA's 51st state.

President Trump also sparked a trade war between Canada and the US, which was first fought against by former Canadian PM, Justin Trudeau, and is now being continued by PM Carney.

Today's meeting between the monarch and PM Carney comes after King Charles displayed his respect for Canada last week in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The King, who is also Canada's monarch, received the Canadian Usher of the Black Rod, Greg Peters, and the Speaker of the Canadian Senate, Raymonde Gagne, at Buckingham Palace on March 12. The King handed over a new ceremonial sword to the Usher of the Black Rod commissioned by the Senate to mark the change of reign.

Who are the Irish Guards?

The Irish Guards is an Irish Regiment formed on 1 April 1900 by Queen Victoria.

Known affectionately throughout the Army as ‘The Micks’, it was founded in recognition of the acts of courage and bravery performed by Irish regiments during the Second Boer War.

Since then, the regiment has continued to serve in numerous major conflicts and guard the Royal Family.

St Patrick’s Day is the traditional celebration of the Irish Guards where its regiment members are presented with fresh shamrock from the Princess of Wales.

Kate's letter to Irish Guards after she was forced to miss Trooping the Colour

The Princess of Wales wrote to the Irish Guards last year to express her pride in the soldiers and wish them good luck for the Colonel's Review.

Kate was unable to attend the event as she was receiving treatment following her cancer diagnosis.

The troops gave their colonel a round of applause after the emotional letter was read out at their barracks.

The letter read: 'I wanted to write and let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel's Review and Trooping the Colour.

'I appreciate everyone trooping this year has been practising for months and dedicating many hours to ensuring their uniforms and drill are immaculate.

'Being your Colonel remains a great honour and I am very sorry that I'm unable to take the salute at this year's Colonel's Review.

'Please pass my apologies to the whole regiment, however I do hope that I am able to represent you all once again very soon.'

Why today will be particularly poignant for Princess Kate

In her role as colonel of the Irish Guards, Kate will today present traditional sprigs of shamrock to officers and guardsmen at the Wellington Barracks in London.

She will also award long service and good conduct medals to soldiers.

It comes after she was unable to attend the ceremony last year as she was undergoing treatment for her cancer diagnosis.

Despite this, Kate was honoured in her absence as the guardsman gave three cheers for their absent colonel as they read out her letter of apologies for missing the event.

Her return today signals another positive step for the Princess, as she gradually steps up her return to Royal duties.
