Rwanda Cuts Diplomatic Ties with Belgium, Expels Diplomats

Rwanda has severed diplomatic ties with Belgium and given Belgian diplomats 48 hours to leave the country. Kigali’s foreign affairs ministry announced the decision on Monday, accusing Belgium of interference. The ministry criticized Brussels for allegedly undermining Kigali before and during the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Belgium recently halted aid and froze trade agreements with Kigali over Rwanda’s alleged support for rebel forces in eastern DRC. Despite growing pressure, President Paul Kagame, in a fiery press conference, vowed to resist what he called Belgium’s neo-colonial interference. The move escalates tensions between the two nations, as Rwanda faces growing international scrutiny over its involvement in the DRC’s resource-rich provinces.
