Shawn Theodore slammed 13 kills to lead Abington Heights to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-21) win over Blue Ridge on Thursday night in a Lackawanna League boys volleyball match.
Shane Brower and Nolan Moore contributed 10 kills each for the Comets, who earned the preseason favorite role by the league coaches. Ryan Horutz ran the offense with 33 assists and three aces, while Chris Cummins had 12 digs and four assists for Abington Heights (2-0).
Parker Glasgow had six kills, Jacob Brown had five kills, Bryce Conklin had 15 digs, and Riley Phillips contributed 12 assists and nine digs, for Blue Ridge (0-1), which saw its 22-match winning streak in the league snapped.
Western Wayne 3, West Scranton 1: Vinny Silon had 29 kills and two aces to lead the Wildcats to a 25-19, 25-14, 23-25, 25-23 win. John Pyatt added 17 kills, and Theo Black had 49 assists for Western Wayne (2-0). Antonio Cordaro had 15 assists, Emilio Moya had seven kills and Emanuel Benitez had five kills, six digs and four aces for West Scranton (1-1).
Valley View 3, Lackawanna Trail 0: Mike Shemonski had 10 kills and three blocks, Jesus Isidro had four aces and four digs, and Luke Stevens added five kills and four blocks to lead the Cougars (1-0) to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-12 win. Wyatt Laytos had 14 digs and seven kills, Aiden Megivern had nine assists and eight digs, and Holden Edwards had 15 digs for Lackawanna Trail (0-2).
Baseball
North Pocono 5, Berwick 0: Nick Reese struck out 12 batters and only allowed one hit, earning a shutout win for North Pocono against Berwick on the road.
Dylan Hunter paced the Trojans offense with two hits, while Luke Sult had Berwick’s lone hit. Cole Phillips started on the mound for Berwick, striking out four batters over six innings.
Honesdale 6, Wilkes-Barre Area 1: At Wilkes-Barre, Jared Ahern tossed a complete game four-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Honesdale over Wilkes-Barre Area in a nonleague game.
Connor Tirney had a single and scored two runs for Honesdale. Ethan Corso had a single and RBI. Ahern helped his cause with a base hit and RBI.
Alex Hufford had two hits for Wilkes-Barre Area, while Jake Howe and Omar Jerez each had a single.
Pittston Area 11, Old Forge 3: At Pittston Area, Jake Aftewicz had three hits, including a pair of doubles as the Patriots defeated Old Forge in a nonleague game.
TJ Johnson pitched the first four innings to get the win. Chase Montigney tripled and drove in two. Richard Tonte had two hits, including a double and drove in three.
Frankie Pero had two hits and an RBI for Old Forge, while TJ DiMattia had a double and a run.
Holy Redeemer 12, Western Wayne 2: At Gibby Field, Holy Redeemer had seven doubles in a nonleague win over Western Wayne.
Western Wayne scored its runs in the top of the first. Holy Redeemer answered with one in the bottom of the first, before scoring five times in the fifth and six runs in the sixth.
Sam Shovlin drove in two runs for Holy Redeemer, while Drew Cisney scored twice and drove in one. Cody Quaglia pitched five innings of four-hit ball to get the win, striking out nine.
Western Wayne’s Damion Glackin had two hits and one run. Ethan Lamberton added a double and two RBIs, and Jamie Chapman had two hits, including a double.
Abington Heights 6, Mid Valley 1: At Mid Valley, Reese Zalewski had two hits and two RBIs, Tate Pentasuglio added a triple and Abington Heights defeated Mid Valley in a nonleague matchup.
Winning pitcher Nick Bradley struck out five batters over six innings and had two hits at the plate.
Nick Mills hit as solo home run in the first inning for Mid Valley’. Starting pitcher Cooper Lukasavage struck out two batters over 4.1 innings.
Valley View 10, Lakeland 4: At Valley View, the host Cougars scored in every inning to defeat Lakeland in a nonleague matchup Thursday.
Zack Cwalinski had two doubles, including one that drove in two runs in the fourth inning that gave Valley View a 5-1 lead. Brayden McConnell and Jonathan Greenburg each added two hits and one RBI, while Kevin Essig had a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring.
Ryan McGrane had two hits, including a double, and one RBI for Lakeland.
West Scranton 6, Pottsville 5: At Pottsville, West Scranton rallied for five runs over the final three innings to defeat the Crimson Tide in a nonleague game.
Aiden Williams had two hits for the Invaders. Michael D’Augostine threw three scoreless innings of relief with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts to earn the victory. Caiden Berardi pitched a scoreless seventh with three strikeouts to notch the save.
Montrose 32, Tunkhannock 14: At Tunkhannock, Hudson Aukema went 4 for 4 with eight RBIs as Montrose won a nonleague slugfest over the Tigers.
Aukema had a three-run double in the second, a bases-loaded walk in the third, a two-run home run in the fourth and RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Meteors finished with 18 hits, 11 of them for extra bases. CJ McGee added a double and five RBIs. Adam Sorenson had four hits, four RBIs and scored five runs.
Tunkhannock finished with 14 hits, six for extra bases. Ethan Dominick had a grand slam in the fourth inning as part of a two-hit day. Brandon Kozlansky tripled and drove in three runs and scored three. Matthew Kaleta had three RBIs.
Softball
At North Pocono, Amelia Bell pitched a complete game, striking out 11 batters and leading the Lady Trojans past Dallas in an 8-2 nonleague victory.
Adysen Iyoob hit a home run for the Lady Trojans, while Bell and Alyssa Lynch each had two hits. Alyssa Traver paced Dallas with two hits, including a double.
Dallas starter Nina Barrouk went five innings, striking out eight batters in the loss.
Holy Cross 12, Carbondale Area 0: At St. Anthony’s Playground, Ava Schmidt struck out 10 batters and hit a home run to lead Holy Cross past Carbondale Area in five innings.
Peyton Graboske had two doubles and two RBIs for Holy Cross, while Jules Galella and Mia Galella added three hits and a home run, respectively. Maureen Newcomb had Carbondale’s lone hit.
Girls lacrosse
Delaware Valley senior Ava Kraszewski scored seven goals to lead the Warriors past Dallas, 12-3, at home.
With her first goal, Kraszewski became Delaware Valley’s all-time program points leader, with 247 career points. Her sixth goal of the game helped her surpass the program record for career goals, now boasting 213.
Carrigan McCormack added a hat trick for the Warriors, while Ella English scored two goals to lead Dallas.
