Hunterdon K-9 graduates from scene detection school 

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III announced Detective Edward Pawlick and K-9 Officer McGinley (Mac) have graduated from the New Jersey State Police K-9 Scent Detection School. The new K-9 team is trained in detecting explosives. The class graduated 26 K-9 teams, consisting of 19 explosive detection teams and 7 narcotic detection teams. The explosive detection teams are trained to indicate on twenty types of explosive materials. Mac is a 2-year-old German Shepard from Czechoslovakia that was donated by Dr. Ceasar DePaco and his wife, Deanna Padovani-DePaco, of Summit Nutritionals International Inc. In September, Pawlick and Mac will attend the New Jersey State Police K-9 Patrol Class, an extensive training program that prepares handlers and their K-9’s for criminal apprehension, tracking, building searches for suspect and article searches.

Rabid bat found in South Brunswick home 

On June 17, a bat, which tested positive for rabies, was found in a South Brunswick home in the vicinity of Brook Drive and Spruce Lane, according to a community notification from police. The bat died and was turned over to the New Jersey Department of Health Laboratory. This is the seventh rabid animal reported in Middlesex County in 2018 and the first rabid animal reported in the township, the announcement said. The South Brunswick Health Department continues to monitor rabies cases within the municipality. Residents should report wild animals showing signs of unusual behavior to the Police Department. For additional information visit southbrunswicknj.gov.

838 students taking part in event

838 high school rising-seniors from New Jersey are attending the 73rd session of American Legion Jersey Boys State (ALJBS), held annually at Rider University in Lawrenceville. Students are afforded the opportunity to govern and interact with their peers from across New Jersey as they run their own mythical 51st state from Sunday, June 17, through Friday, June 22. Among them are 10 students from Hunterdon County, 57 students from Middlesex County, 78 students from Morris County, 39 students from Somerset County and 30 students from Union County. Asaro-Angelo sworn in as Labor Commissioner

Robert Asaro-Angelo was sworn in as Commissioner of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development by Gov. Phil Murphy on Tuesday, June 19. The governor tapped Asaro-Angelo for the Cabinet post in January, and the Senate confirmed him unanimously in March. Visit nj.gov/labor/.

St. Hubert’s welcomes final flight of hurricane pets

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center is reuniting dogs and cats this week with owners impacted by Hurricane Maria. This is the final airlift from the initiative that began early in 2018. A 737 landed at Atlantic City International Airport with the animals, accompanied by a veterinarian, on Father’s Day. Many people had not seen their pets since the storm. The reunification effort is just one way that St. Hubert’s has helped Puerto Rico pets and people after the hurricane. The shelter welcomed 786 shelter animals in eight days immediately following the storm and has sent staff, sponsored training and continued welcoming large numbers of homeless animals for placement. Free summer arts concert series

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra kicks off Union County’s 57th annual Summer Arts Festival series of free outdoor concerts sponsored by the Freeholder Board with an evening of Broadway favorites, opera overtures and more at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Echo Lake Park in Mountainside. New American citizen welcomed

On June 15, on the historic Somerville courthouse steps, Somerset County Library System of New Jersey Bound Brook Memorial Library branch patron Diana Siguenza became a new U.S. citizen. Siguenza studied for the naturalization test using materials provide by the Library System. In addition to free materials, the library also provides training courses on becoming a citizen. Watson Coleman requests votes

In a letter sent to House Speaker Paul Ryan, U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ 12th District) requested recognition for victims of Sunday, June 17’s shooting at the Art All Night festival in Trenton in the form of votes on gun violence prevention legislation instead of observing a moment of silence on the House floor. The shooting left 22 injured and one dead. The letter lists more than 70 proposals that have been introduced but not yet scheduled for debate, including two proposals from Watson Coleman, The STOP Online Ammunition Sales Act of 2017 and the Handgun Licensing and Registration Act. Kratovil approved for November ballot

Charlie Kratovil has been informed by the Middlesex County Clerk's Office Division of Elections that his candidacy for Mayor of New Brunswick was approved and his name will appear on the Tuesday, Nov. 6, ballot. Kratovil announced his candidacy at a kickoff event on June 6. Supply chain sustainability discussed

The Manufacturing Cabinet of New Jersey, a new consortia of industry organizations committed to advancing the sector as a vital economic stimulus, recently hosted its kick-off event featuring Columbia University professor William “Bill” Russell as the keynote speaker. Walk/run raises funds

On June 9, more than 4,000 supporters joined together in a one mile walk around Verona Park in Essex County to celebrate the courage and resilience of children being treated for cancer and blood disorders. Earlier in the day, the debut of a new flatter, faster 5K certified race course that straddled Verona and West Orange proved popular with more than 800 registered runners. Since breaking the $1 million mark in 2012, more than $7,250,000 (including $1,000,000 and counting at this year’s event) has been raised to support the children and families of The Valerie Fund.
