Brazil could join NATO: Trump

Muscat: US President Donald Trump said that Brazil could possibly join NATO, at a press conference held at the White House.

Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, met with Trump on Tuesday, during the former's maiden visit to the States after being elected to office.

Speaking alongside Brazil's president after a round of bilateral talks, Trump said, "As I told President Bolsonaro, I also intend to designate Brazil as a “Major Non-NATO Ally,” or even possibly, if you start thinking about it, maybe a NATO ally — have to talk to a lot of people, but maybe a NATO ally — which will greatly advance security and cooperation between our countries."

During the meeting, both reportedly discussed the developing situation in Venezuela, with neither of them ruling out the possibility of military intervention.

"Well, there are a few issues that, if you speak, they are no longer strategic," Bolsonaro told reporters."So it’s a matter of strategy. Everything that we discuss here will be honoured, but unfortunately certain pieces of information, if are to come to the table, may not be debated publicly."

Trump added, “...as I said, all options are open. I think of all possibilities. All options are open. We’ll see what happens."

Trump also stated that the US would support Brazil's ambition of joining the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). He said, "We will be supporting — we’re going to have a great relationship in so many different ways. That’s just a — just something that we’re going to be doing in honour of the President and in honour of Brazil."
